Cobra F8 and F8+ Driver

Every year there is one major technology that seems to take the industry by storm. The year after we see other companies start to copy that technology. 2016 was the year of Jailbreak. This year it seems Taylormade may try to copy jailbreak into their line. Instead of copying and refining others technology Cobra has decided to try and make a technology that every one steals next year.

A Milled Face

The first thing people will notice on this driver is the milled face. It has a unique look. The sweet spot is milled in a  circle and the edges of the driver are milled in straight lines. Dont expect this driver to look like a deep milled Scotty though. It is very fine milling. Cobra decided to mill the face for a few reasons. First it should lower spin. The last few years getting spin down while maintaining launch is something everyone is trying to do. High Ball Speed+ High launch + Low Spin = long drives. The second was the precision milling a face can provide. It allowed Cobra to make the faces thinner which will create higher ball speeds. It also allowed them to save some weight. These weight savings can be moved around to increase forgiveness.

360 Aero Technology

The most important thing in creating distance is ball speed. The best way to increase ball speed is to increase club head speed. The way to do that is by reducing drag. Cobra has added “Aerodynamic Trips” around the face of the driver. They look like a special bump on the crown. Cobra claims the special material they use on these trips will increase forgiveness.

Distance and Forgiveness

Remember long drives need high ball speeds, high launch and low spin. We know the milled face will help knock off those last few 100 rpms off  drives.  The 360 Aero Technology helps increase ball speed. Looks like all the club is missing is some help creating high launch. Cobra helps create that higher launch by using a light weight carbon fiber crown. This lowers the center of gravity (COG). A lower COG causes the ball to launch higher and also adds some forgiveness. Cobra has also improved on their patented E9 Technology. This technology has been around for a while. Instead of making the sweet spot an oval or circle they make it an ellipse. This generates faster ball speeds in more spots on the face.

F8 or F8+

Simply put the F8 offers more forgiveness than the F8+. It launches higher and spins more. The MOI (Moment of Inertia) is higher on the F8. The F8+ has a more traditional shape and the settings on the adapter are lower. The other big difference between the F8 and the F8+ is the where you can place the weights. The F8 allows you to place the weights in the back or the heel. The F8+ removes the heel option and moves it closer to the face.  A heavy weight in the face increases launch and will lower spin. The big tradeoff with that will be a loss of forgiveness.  It will take some experimentation with all of the settings to truly dial it in.

Arcoss Technology

Cobra is keeping their partnership with Arccos. This technology will help you track how far you *actually*  hit your drives.  No more days of claiming you hit it 320 when Arccos shows 230. This is a very nice add in. The grip has the sensor in it so there wont be a need to have a huge sensor sticking out the back of your club. The only down side I see is when that grip needs to be replaced.

The Details

The club will hit shelves Janurary 12, 2018. They will come with the Lamkin Connect grip. The stock shaft options will be the Aldila NV 2KXV Blue, Aldila NV 2KXV Green and the Project X HZDRUS Yellow. Clubs will come in RH and LH. Cobra is reducing the color options and giving the option of Black or Nardo. Call it Nardo but in reality its a grey. The ladies version will come in Black/Lexi Blue or Silver/ Raspberry. They will retail for $399. Be on the look out!
